There's a moment in nearly every burn where the reviewer goes quiet for a second, then says some version of: "Wait — what is this actually?" That pause is the sound of your bounce rate. Below are the seven friction points that show up most often across Shopify stores, roughly in the order reviewers hit them.
1. The hero says what you sell, not why anyone should care
"Premium hydration bottles" tells me the category. It doesn't tell me why I should stop scrolling. Reviewers consistently respond to one concrete outcome ("Cold for 24 hours. Fits every cup holder.") over three adjectives.
2. Price is hidden until the product page
Reviewers on collection pages without prices say the same thing: "I don't know if this is a $20 site or a $200 site." Uncertainty about price band is read as a signal that the price is high.
3. Shipping cost shows up at the last possible second
Nothing generates more out-loud frustration than a $9.95 shipping line appearing on the final checkout step. Put your shipping policy on the product page. If you have a free-shipping threshold, say it in the announcement bar.
4. The size or variant picker is ambiguous
"Is this US sizing?" "Which one is the bigger one?" "Does 'Onyx' mean black?" If a reviewer has to guess, they usually guess wrong and then blame the store.
5. Reviews are there, but nobody believes them
Fifty five-star reviews with no photos, no names, no dates. Reviewers scroll past them. Twelve reviews with photos and a couple of honest 3-stars get read.
6. The mobile menu hides the one thing they came for
On mobile, reviewers frequently can't find 'Shop' because it's buried under a hamburger with eight other items. Your top product category should be one tap away.
7. Nothing tells them what happens after they pay
Delivery time, return window, who to email if it's wrong. Reviewers call this out as the thing that would make them 'feel safe' clicking the button. It costs you three lines of text.
Every one of these is fixable in an afternoon. The hard part is knowing which one is yours — and that's the part a burn answers.
